Axle Stonebeard was born the son of Gunnar Stonebeard the last patriarch of that esteemed and honored family. The Stonebeards were once honored heroes among the Dwarves. Shrewd miners, expert engineers and gifted stone cutters they also were heroes of the wars against the Roden.

Good fortune soon abandoned the Stonebeards, and the legend says that in the great battle against the Roden First Warlock, Rizzit Kantz, Finnbar Stonebeard the family patriarch back then defeated the loathsome Roden monarch in personal combat, finally ending that creature’s reign that almost saw the Dwarves pushed out of their ancestral home, however before he died, Rizzit cursed the Stonebeards and warned that though he died, the Stonebeards would live long but be cursed to lose all they held dear.

For the next three generations leading up to the present day, the Stonebeards met with unprecedented misfortune. One of the family’s most prized mine shafts collapsed and killed hundreds, and cost the Stonebeards a staggering sum and a mark on their reputation. The Stonebeards had secured a direct line to the Thane through marriage, but Connor Stonebeard and his beautiful bride the daughter of the Thane met with tragedy and while surveying their estate Brunhilde his bride was killed by Roden in a random raid, and Connor lost his eye. The Thane blamed Connor for failing to protect his daughter and this was yet another black mark on the family’s honor.

Gunnar, Axle’s father, came of age in a Dwarven family struggling to maintain their name. Gunnar became a bitter drunk that blamed his misfortune on others and did little to raise the family’s fortunes, and took to beating and berating his sons, Axle, Willem, and Grimm. The brothers grew close and worked hard to do what they could for the family, but then Gunnar committed suicide, a taboo among the Dwarves, especially when not part of a suicide oath to face the enemies of the Dwarves, and especially when in deeply in debt as he was.

The brothers were devoted to their long suffering mother Winnifred, and they were angry with how their father left her, poor, a social outcast, and struggling to survive. Grimm the oldest is doing his best to hold the family together, but he lost his arm serving in defense of The Range and has taken up drinking like his father. Willem means well, but was always the more bookish of the three, and while he does well to aid his Mother in running the household, he can only do odd jobs to make enough money to keep the family fed. Willem is married, and has two sons of his own, Liam and Nells, to carry on the Stonebeard name.

So, it fell on Axle, the middle son, and somewhat skilled in arms to do the only thing left to do. Axle agreed to make the sacrifice and leave The Range and go to the surface where he joined the Order Cerberus. Axle has now set out to find fortune, and glory and hopefully break Finnbar’s Curse and restore the Stonebeards to their former status among the Dwarves. Willem is proud of his brother Axle, while Grimm thinks him a fool.

Axle writes his mother regularly and sends her what money he can. Axle is also a talented stone cutter and jeweler and collects, shapes, and polishes rocks as a hobby. Axle has been living on the surface for a little over a year now, most of that spent in the Seven Lakes area. Axle has been keen to learn what he can about the orcs and he has fought them on more than one occasion costing him the tip of his left middle finger and a nice scar across his left eye that he almost lost to an orc’s axe. Axle has built a grudging respect for the orcs savagery and combat prowess, but make no mistakes, he knows the threat they pose to the people of Seven Lakes and is taking an active hand in helping the people of Burroughs against the growing boldness of the local tribes.
